Puppy School Courses

Puppy School is a set of six puppy training classes lasting one hour. The comprehensive programme has been carefully designed to take you through all the obedience basics giving you a good foundation for life with your new puppy or for any dog training sport you choose to do later. Puppies need to begin classes between 12 – 20 weeks old so that they are all at a similar stage of development.

The puppy training exercises gradually progress from easy to more complex, building on your puppy’s understanding and reliability each week.

You will learn how to teach your puppy to:

  • Come when called
  • Sit, lie down, stand on command
  • Walk on a loose lead without pulling
  • Get used to being handled and examined for vets and groomers
  • ‘Stay’
  • ‘Settle’
  • ‘Gentle’ (taking food from hands gently)
  • Accept people near to food bowls, bones and chew
  • Stop play biting
  • Socialise with an adults, children, and other puppies attending class
  • Greet people appropriately without jumping up

Only reward-based puppy training methods are used at Puppy School. Treats, toys and praise are used to encourage puppies to be well behaved. No bullying or rough handling is tolerated.

Puppies will be allowed to play in carefully controlled small groups to ensure they learn good manners around other puppies, do not get scared, and do not learn to play roughly or aggressively. Puppies will be matched for size, age, and experience, and play will be carefully supervised to ensure that all puppies learn to be confident with others.

All our Puppy School clients will receive a free Puppy School manual (sponsored by www.naturesmenu.co.uk) as an accompaniment to our classes.

Our Puppy School Manual will allow you to read back through class sessions and to practice training at home.

Although all the information you will need to train your puppy will be given to you in class, you will need to set aside time every day to practise the exercises at home to make the most of the ideas you have been given. Training at home will allow you to progress further in class and will result in a better trained puppy at the end of the six weeks.

To help with this, our Puppy School Manual includes detailed and helpful information on what your tutor taught during each week of the course. Instructions are broken down in nice, easy, readable little exercises allowing all the family to get involved with the weekly training.

Our Puppy School Manual also includes informative information about what to expect at classes, what to bring with you each week, how to help your puppy to prepare for the car journey, details on the importance of playing and bonding with your puppy as well as information about Natures Menu, who have been creating 100% real, natural, wholesome food for pets for over thirty-five years.

APDT Good Companion Award Courses

The APDT,  Good Companion Awards are designed to help general dog owners and is for dogs over 20 weeks of age. They have been designed to help motivate trainers and trainees to continue to enjoy exercises in life skills.

There are four levels of the awards- Stages 1,2,3 and 4.

We run stage one of the APDT as a six-week course where we work on a curriculum starting with basic exercises such as:
  • positions,
  • stay,
  • loose lead walking,
  • recall,
  •  control amongst other dogs,
  • leave
  • door manners
Only reward-based training methods are used at Sam’s k9 Academy. Treats, toys and praise are used to encourage dogs to be well behaved.

We work on a very low dog to trainer ratio in our classes, this means that the trainers are able to spend more time working with you and the dogs don’t get over whelmed.

As a part of the course we give all our owners a training diary along with a packet of training treats and a chew on week one, then following your assessment on week 6 of the course you will receive a certificate, rosette and goody bag filled with all things dogs like.

After the stage one course is completed you are welcome to continue training with us in one of our rolling start classes. You can work your way up to APDT Stage 4 Jubilee Exercises where we work on more difficult behaviours such as off lead walking, sending the dog to targets such as their beds, emergency stops and recalls from distractions. Each level aims to offer a natural progression to maintain interest and enthusiasm for both dog and handler.

One to One Training and Behavioural Sessions

General One to One Training

General training one to one lessons are great if you are unable to attend classes due to work shifts or commitments, or just want more one on one time to focus on a particular issue.

These lessons can currently be held at the owner’s home or at our Mold venue, and we can cover exercises such as:

  • lead walking
  • recall
  • focus
  • teaching general good manners
  • toilet training
  • mouthing

We understand that every dog is different and that people experience different problems so during your lesson you can ask Sam anything about dog ownership.

Lessons are an hour long, contact us for our availability.

Behavioural Session

Behavioural sessions are for specific behaviour problems e.g. separation anxiety, excessive barking, reactivity, or aggression.

During your session we will devise a specific behaviour modification programme for you and your dog and if needed we will work with your veterinary practice to help your dog overcome their problems. We will also devise a personalised training plan to help you while you are training.

We understand that every dog is different and that people experience different problems so during your lesson you can ask Sam anything about dog ownership.

The initial session will last for up to two hours and can be held in your home, at our Mold venue.
